Attacking Cover 2 Zone
Cover 2 Zone coverage is one of the more popular pass coverages in football ,however, in the football video game world, it has not. The main reason is lack of consistent pass rush from the defensive line. Enable for Cover 2 Zone coverage to be effective, the defensive line must get to the QB. Below we look at a pass passing concepts from the Texas Longhorns playbook that we like to run to beat Cover 2 Zone coverage.

Four Verticals

The Four Verticals is great passing concept to attack not only Cover 2, but also Cover 3 coverage. With four receivers running vertical routes, the two safeties dropping back deep will be hard pressed to cover them all. The Shotgun Empty Trey Four Verticals has four receivers running vertical routes, while the TE (A) runs a spot route underneath. This concept is very difficult to cover regardless what type of zone coverage is called.

If for some reason the defense is able to get pressure, look to throw to the TE running the spot route.

In the screen shot you can see the safeties are out numbered by the four receivers running verticals.

The safeties will go outwide to cover SE and FL. This leaves the deep middle of the field wide open for one of the slot receivers. In the screen shot above, we throw to the slot receiver on the left by throwing a hard bullet pass inside.

We take control of the slot receiver and make the catch deep down the field.
