Gun Split Slot Cross Clearout

Concept:

Even though man coverage is not used as much as years past, you still need a few plays in your pocket to beat it. The Gun Splt Slot Cross Clearout is one of primary plays we use to beat man coverage by looking for the WR3 running the crossing route. By sending to the two outside receivers on streaks they will force the safeties to drop back further in pass coverage.

Progression Reads

  1. WR3 (A) - Cross
  2. WR2 (X) - Streak
  3. WR1 (B) - Streak
  4. HB (Y) -
  5. FB (LB) - Swing

Offensive Plays Used:

Defensive Play Used:

How the Concept Works on the Field:

The play we call for this concept is the Gun Split Slot Cross Weak Flood. For this concept, we don't actually have to hot route the WR1 and WR2 on streaks. However, we do at least hot route the WR2 on a streak to make sure he draws the FS away from the WR3.

The defense comes out in the Quarter Combo Man Up 3 Deep.

We hot both the outside receivers on streaks.

Once the ball is snapped, we focus in on the WR3.

Against man coverage, you can bet he is going to get some seperation on his man.

We make the catch and have room to run.

Key Points:

  • If zone coverage is called, you may want to hot route the HB on a curl, to give you a check down receiver undenreath between the hash marks.
  • If Cover 1 Robber is called, look to throw to the outside receivers. You will need to lead the pass inside.

Good scheme, I use cross and slant patterns as my primary passing attack! The only time it doesn't work very well is in the red zone!!!
