Kobra's Corner Madden NFL 09: Right Stick Hot Route Post Snap

April 1, 2009

By Paul "Kobra" Gleason

Many of you may already know this tip, but for those that don't, it may make the difference between taking a sack and having a big pass play down the field. Back in Madden 04, EA introduced the ability to hot route a receiver after the ball was snapped. For those that used Michael Vick, you know how effective it was when utilized right. In Madden 09, the feature is still in the game. We are going to show an example of how the right stick hot route post snap could be used during a real game situation.

The offensive play called is the Gun Spread Curls. Notice that no receiver is running any type of deep route.

Once the ball is snapped, we notice the safeties split out wide. This tells us the pass coverage is Cover 2. If we had a receiver running a deep seem route, we could look to exploit this coverage for a deep pass play. Notice the HB is running an angle route.

If we roll our QB out of the pocket to the right and ...

... then flip the right stick up, we can send our HB on a streak while on the fly.

With him now running a streak, we can exploit the Cover 2 coverage.

We make the catch in the end zone for six points.

Final Thoughts

You will want to play with the feature because not only can you send a receiver on streak by pressing the right stick up, but you can send him on post, corner, or even a comeback right by pressing the right stick left, right, or down. Something else you need know when using this feature is that it can only be done once the QB is out of the pocket. If you get some time this week, we suggest trying it out and seeing if you can implement into your offensive game plan.
