Kobra's Corner: Nickel Strong 2 Man Under

February 11, 2009

By Paul "Kobra" Gleason

Don't forget to check out this week's video on the here on the Madden NFL landing page.

This week for Kobra's Corner, I want to take a look at a blitz from the Nickel Strong formation that is easy to set up and effective.

Note: this write up was taken from the VG Sports Madden Filmroom and Defensive Video Playbook. For more info, please click here.

For years, 2 Man Under was the most used coverage scheme in Madden. Of course Madden 09, most of us don't use it as much because man coverage is not as strong as years past. However, if a few pre-snap adjustments are made, it can still be an effective coverage scheme to call this year.

To set the defensive up, we shift the defensive line to the left.

Next, we switch the NB and ...

... hot route him to blitz.

Next, we move the NB to the inside so that he lines up next to the RE.

If you look at the screen shot above, notice the RE and WDT pass rush angles shoot straight down, while the NB's shoots through the B Gap. The pressure will either come from the NB or RE. At this point the set up is completed, but keep in mind you have man coverage all over the field.

To mix some zone coverage in, we like to hot route the ROLB and MLB into hook zones. Keep in mind this can be done globally.

The other adjustment we like to make is to hot route the LE into QB Contain. This will help keep your opponent from rolling out his QB to the right side of the field.

Once the ball is snapped, the LT will have to make a choice on who to block. Does he block the RE or NB?

Who he blocks will determine who gets the pressure. In some cases it may be the NB shooting through the B Gap. In other cases, it will be the RE getting outside pressure.

Final Thoughts

I really like this blitz because it's pretty easy to set up, but yet effective even if your opponent comes out in shotgun. Something I didn't show was bump-n-run coverage. If you plan on using it, be sure to call it before you move the NB inside. Otherwise, if you do it after you move him, he may move back outside. Be sure to watch the video for alternate set ups for this blitz scheme.

On a side note, next week I will add part 2 for the HB Angle route.
