Kobra's Corner: HB Angle Route Part 2

February 17, 2009

By Paul "Kobra" Gleason

Don't for get to check out this week's video here on the Madden NFL 09 landing page.

A few weeks ago, I showed how the HB Angle route can be effective against most zone coverages. This week, I want to expand on this route by showing a defensive scheme that does a good job at countering it. After I show the defensive scheme, I will show what adjustments need to be made to beat it when running the HB Angle route.

We come out in the Gun Spread Curl Flats. We want to focus in on the HB running the angle route.

The defense called is 2-4-5 Cover 2 Sink. The default set up won't be able to defend the HB angle route because the linebackers will sink to far back in their hook zones, allowing the HB to get open underneath.

If your opponent was to hot route the two defensive tackles into QB Spy, they will be in position to defend angle route ran by the HB.

The only pre-snap adjustment we make is to hot route the SL2 (A) on a curl. More on why we do this later on in the write up.

Once the ball is snapped, notice the two defensive tackles drop back in QB Spy. Notice they don't drop as far back as the linebackers playing hook zones. Because of this, they are in better position to defend the HB angle route once he breaks over the middle.

To counter the two defensive tackles move the QB a little to the left. This will move the defensive tackles in the same direction as the QB.

The reason we hot route the SL2 on curl is because we want to make sure the defender dropping back in a hook zone on that side of the field has no chance to come up and make a play on the HB's angle route.

With the defensive tackles now out of position, we throw a bullet pass to the HB as he breaks over the middle.

We make the catch for an 8 yard pick up.

Final Thoughts

I hope this write up gives you a better idea of why the HB angle route works in Madden 09. I wouldn't run this route too often because an experienced player on defense will find a defense to defend it. Be sure to watch the video breakdown to see the HB angle route in action out of the Gun Spread.
