NBA LIVE 09 Producer Blog: ESPN NBA Game of the Week

January 30, 2009

By Garreth Reeder

Hey guys, just wanted to touch base with you all on the ESPN Game of the Week. As you may have noticed, we've partnered with ESPN to highlight one of their televised games every week. This weekly matchup will dynamically appear in your Play Now games and for online games. Traditionally, we've always shown the two NBA Finals teams, but in this era of connectivity it seemed much better to surface different matchups throughout the year.

Since the patch, we've also added an extra piece to online ranked games. When you play a Game of the Week match, we track the wins for each team, as well as most of the in-game stats. In the game we only surface the wins per team, but starting weekly in my blog I'll be sharing some of the other stats with you.

In a bit of a personal LOL moment, we built the screen to max out at 999 wins per side, but the Christmas Day matchups destroyed these totals. Combined on 360/PS3, there were 9773 game played, with the Lakers winning 6002 (61%) to the Celtics 3771 (39%). Looks like there are a lot of good Lakers fans out there :-). Below are some other key stats from that matchup (360/PS3 combined):

It's cool to see how close the stats are in these games... a lot of the games must have been close. Perhaps Kobe's clutch came through in the end of a lot of games? It looks like LA had a lot more blocked shots and fewer turnovers.

Here is a quick breakdown of the matchups since the Christmas Day game:

In real life, the Celtics just dismantled the Mavs, but interestingly you guys had Dallas coming out on top. Check out the results below:

Again, the stats were pretty close, but the Mav fans won 59% of the games. The next time the Celtics are up, you Boston fans better bring it.

This week we are featuring the Cavs and the Pistons. Normally this would be a good tilt, but the Pistons have been shaky and it looks like you guys are showing that, with the Cavs at 100 more wins so far. Get online and play for your favorite team leading up to Sunday; I'll be back next week to post the results.

Thanks guys,

Garreth (iminurbase)
